5-minute EV charging: BYD closes the refuelling gap between electric and petrol

  • 5-minute EV charging with BYD’s 1,000 kW ultra-fast charging adds 400 km in just five minutes, matching petrol refueling speeds.
  • Breakthrough for EV adoption as this technology eliminates charging time concerns, making EVs as practical as petrol cars.
  • Infrastructure expansion with BYD planning 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China, supporting global adoption despite power grid challenges.

BYD’s Super e-Platform brings 1,000 kW charging to everyday EVs for a 5-minute EV charging experience

5-minute EV charging is no longer a distant dream. BYD’s Super e-Platform introduces 1,000-kW ultra-fast charging, making EV refuelling about as quick as filling a petrol tank.

Breaking the 5-minute EV charging barrier

BYD’s cutting-edge 1,000 kW technology adds 400 km (249 miles) of range in just five minutes. With 5-minute EV charging, owning an electric car is becoming more practical than ever. The 1,000 kW, or MegaWatt, charging speed has previously been reserved for eHGVs. Its implementation in a passenger vehicle changes the way we see charging going forward.

This breakthrough makes EV ownership as convenient as driving a petrol car. Considering the fact that fast-charging stations require 20-30 minutes for a significant charge. Many current EV owners know that this isn’t usually an issue. However, would-be adopters who are stuck on the fence due to concerns over charging times will have those issues squashed with this announcement.

Another key component is BYD’s Flash-Charge Blade Batteries. Designed for extreme fast charging (10C charging), they allow a full charge in just six minutes. It’s yet another example of how BYD are leaps and bounds ahead in some technological aspects.

Challenges and the road ahead

Despite the excitement, there are challenges. Ultra-fast charging places high demands on power grids. Even with energy storage, rolling out this infrastructure in some regions may take time. However, the rapid rollout of V2G charging solutions is the key to minimising, or even eliminating that issue.

BYD plans is building 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China to support the technology. These stations will include energy storage solutions to ensure a stable power supply. With the brand’s rapid globalisation, it’s safe to assume that the tech will find its way around the world soon enough.

Still, BYD’s 5-minute EV charging proves that EV technology is evolving rapidly. As charging speeds improve and infrastructure expands, the reasons not to go electric are quickly disappearing.
