Secretary of Pennsylvania Department of Transport, Mike Carroll, has recently announced a new $37 million investment which will see 515 new public charging ports installed across Southeastern Pennsylvania, leading to improved EV infrastructure for Philadelphia and surrounding areas in the region.
More charging infrastructure for Pennsylvania as state encourages more drivers to switch
The funding comes from the Community Charging phase of the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, with awards spread across the state’s Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties. PennDOT says the new ports will increase the number of chargers in the Southeastern region by 27%, with Philadelphia itself seeing a 53% rise.
Pennsylvania has been one of the most active states when it comes to the NEVI program, which is still ongoing under the Trump administration after its suspension was challenged successfully in federal court. Pennsylvania has now opened 54 NEVI-funded stations, more than double that of any other state, with a further 34 in planning or under construction across the state. Since the first site opened in December 2023, they have supported over 183,000 charging sessions.
Mike Carroll, Secretary of PennDOT, commented:
“The Shapiro Administration hit the ground running with EV funding and the results speak for themselves. Under the Governor’s leadership, Delaware Valley residents and travelers will soon have access to more than 500 new EV chargers in their communities.”
While the Trump administration has enacted several anti-EV policies over the last two years and undone previous efforts from Biden’s presidency, states like Pennsylvania are still pushing ahead with their own plans to boost EV adoption. It’s not the only place in the US recently announcing significant public charging investment, with Seattle, Washington recently announcing plans to install 200 curbside EV chargers to help drivers without off-street parking make the switch to an electric vehicle. California, meanwhile, also recently introduced its own legislation to further boost adoption there.
