2 million EVs are now on UK roads, as more drivers make the switch

Total EV registrations in the UK pass 2 million, as more drivers benefit from the Electric Car Grant

The UK’s Department for Transport has announced a key electrification milestone for the country: Over two million electric vehicles are now registered on UK roads, and that figure is set to rise more rapidly in the years to come.

New figures which show the UK’s overall vehicle licensing statistics in 2025 show that EVs now make up around 4.8% of all licensed vehicles, with approximately 2,012,000 zero-emission vehicles registered on the road as of the end of 2025. A significant proportion of this total number came from new registrations in 2025, with 528,000 zero-emission vehicles registered during the period. It’s worth noting that these figures cover electric vehicles of all types – such as cars, motorcycles, vans, buses, and trucks.

2025 was also a great year for new electric passenger car registrations, with EVs accounting for a record 23.4% of all new cars registered within the year. With 2030 and 2035 deadlines within the ZEV mandate getting closer, EV uptake is set to rise even further in the next few years, boosting that total two million figure up further. The news that the average EV list price now undercuts the average petrol car is yet another promising step.

The number of EVs on UK roads has also been assisted with the introduction of the government’s Electric Car Grant last summer, which offers up to £3,750 off the price of qualifying new EVs. Over 100,000 new buyers have benefited from this scheme, and since the scheme launched, the government has measured a 10% rise in demand for electric cars.

Heidi Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport, commented:

“Today, over two million EVs are now registered across the UK – a key moment in the UK’s transition to electric, backed by £7.5 billion in government funding. And as global fuel prices continue to fluctuate, making the switch has never made more sense.

We’ve made it cheaper and easier than ever to buy an EV, helping over 100,000 drivers save up to £3,750 off the cost of a new electric car. We’re also investing £600 million to deliver hundreds of thousands of additional chargers to support this uptick and build on the 119,000 already available – that’s twice the number of petrol pumps.”
