- Volvo has revealed its latest fully-electric car, the ES90 – which it says combines the refinement of a saloon, comfort of an SUV, and increased practicality of a fastback.
- Based on the same SPA2 architecture as the EX90 electric SUV, UK pricing for the ES90 starts from £69,650 – rising to £87,850 for the top specification, most powerful form.
- Order books for the new EV have opened now, making the ES90 the sixth fully-electric option within Volvo’s portfolio.
Volvo adds a sixth model to its EV lineup
With most of the best selling EVs – particularly in Europe – being of the SUV and crossover variety, the ES90 exists as a more unique proposition to potential buyers. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Volvo have tried to combine elements of other body types. The ride height and ground clearance of the ES90 is more comparable to an SUV than a typical saloon, while the less practical saloon boot has been swapped out for a liftback, increasing practicality. These differences could help the ES90 sell to a wider range of customers than a typical electric saloon.
At its high price point, however, the ES90 will be taking the fight to premium electric executives like the Audi A6 Sportback e-tron, Tesla Model S, and the relatively more affordable Volkswagen ID.7.
There’s no major design surprises here, with the front end and interior closely matching the premium image of the larger EX90 SUV. Specifications wise, a drivable range of up to 700km will be possible, depending on the battery and motor combination specified. This class-leading range is helped along by the fact that the ES90 is the most aerodynamic car ever built by Volvo. An ultra-rapid charging speed of up to 350kW will also be on tap, allowing the ES90 to add 300 kilometres of range in around 10 minutes. Opt for the ‘Twin Motor Performance’ powertrain, and the ES90 will deliver a 0-62mph time of 4.0 seconds – enough to match some of the best electric sports cars, in what is still a practical saloon.
