Saudi Arabia accelerates its EV momentum

Is Saudi Arabia becoming a Middle East leader for electric vehicle adoption?
  • Despite Saudi Arabia’s historic dependency on oil, the kingdom is rapidly emerging as a pivotal player in the global EV industry, particularly for the Middle East.
  • This is occurring through strong progress in charging infrastructure, local EV brands, and strategic partnerships that bridge international expertise with local manufacturing.
  • This evolution is boosted by a strategy that tackles both supply and demand, by building a strong charging network, enabling local EV production, and attracting global OEM engagement.

Growing EV charging infrastructure

A foundational pillar of Saudi Arabia’s EV strategy is the nationwide charging network being deployed by EVIQ – a joint venture backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund and the Saudi Electricity Company.

Among these expansions is the recent launch of a new EV charging location in partnership with Petromin, strategically sited at Petromin Al Qumma. Stations such as these are boosting confidence for EV drivers, especially along key travel routes.

EVIQ’s role doesn’t stop at physical infrastructure. The company is also engaging in global standards initiatives and forging partnerships across OEMs such as BYD.

Local EV manufacturing

Infrastructure is only one side of the equation – local supply of EVs is also critical. On that front, Ceer, Saudi Arabia’s first homegrown EV brand, is gearing up for a launch this year. The company has already secured over $1.4 billion in commercial agreements, and is targeting a 45% localisation rate.

As well as local EV brands, America’s Lucid Motors is also expanding in the Middle East, opening up a manufacturing facility within Saudi Arabia. Lucid has also received continuous funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

To summarise:

  • Charging infrastructure is scaling at speed, reducing range anxiety and enabling nationwide EV travel.
  • Local manufacturing is becoming a reality, with both domestic and international brands poised to serve local and export markets.
  • Collaboration across public and private companies is accelerating the maturity of Saudi Arabia’s EV ecosystem.
