- All-electric car brand Polestar is launching a vehicle to home (V2H) charging offer for Polestar 3 drivers in California, allowing drivers to make the most of the bidirectional charging capabilities this new EV offers.
- The offer, which is being ran in partnership with dcbel energy, will allow Polestar 3 drivers to reduce their costs of ownership by allowing their EV to send energy back to their house or the wider energy grid.
- California is the first state to benefit from this new offer, but Polestar plans to potentially roll out the offer to other US states in the future.
Vehicle to home charging set to reduce EV ownership costs
The new vehicle to home package will combine a smart charging solution which allows the Polestar 3’s battery to be discharged either back into the house, or sold back into the grid. The former will allow energy charged into the EV battery at a time when energy is cheaper to be discharged back into the property when required, when energy costs are higher. The ability to sell that energy back into the grid also opens up another revenue opportunity for owners, helping to reduce overall costs of EV ownership – making them an even more attractive option compared to fossil-fuelled rivals.
In the case of energy blackouts, the system will also allow the Polestar 3 to power the house during this time. Polestar say that the 3’s battery is enough to solely power a home for up to 10 days, when energy is used sparingly.
Vehicle to home and vehicle to grid technology is set to be a key part of future EV ownership, allowing electric vehicles to play an even more key role in the energy ecosystem.
Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO, commented:
“Bi-directional charging is a gamechanger, not only for the car industry, but the home energy ecosystem. As it lowers your total cost of ownership and makes your car work for you even when parked, this makes the choice of driving a Polestar even more attractive.”
Olivier Loedel, Head of Software product management at Polestar, added:
“We are very excited to deliver this initial bi-directional charging offer together with our North American partner dcbel. It’s a new technology that requires a sophisticated and intelligent ecosystem, and this marks an important first step as we aim to launch bi-directional charging features to more Polestar customer in more markets.”
