Pennsylvania to invest $100m in EV charging infrastructure

PennDOT to use $100 million worth of NEVI funding to carry out four regional EV charging funds in 2026.
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced four regional funding opportunities for EV charging in 2026.
  • This will see PennDOT invest $100 million worth of its National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding into community-focussed public EV charging projects.
  • The opportunity to apply for funding is open to all organizations who are registered to carry out business in the state.

Pennsylvania unlocks significant $100 million for public EV charging growth

Throughout 2026, PennDOT will launch four specific regional funding opportunities, totalling $100 million. This funding will be open to businesses across the sector – including site owners, EV charging operators, installer firms, hardware firms, and more. The department has detailed more eligibility criteria on its website.

The Southeast region of Pennsylvania, which covers its largest city, Philadelphia, is the first of the four regional programs to announce its funding opportunity, with the winning applicants set to be awarded in late 2026. Award announcements for the other three regions (West, Central, and East) will follow through 2027. PennDOT estimates that in total, the $100 million in funding will result in well over 100 new individual EV charging projects launching in the state.

Despite the Trump administration’s rollback of pro-EV policies, including a failed attempt to freeze the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, states such as Pennsylvania are continuing to benefit from funding that is boosting the availability of public charging infrastructure. The state of Georgia also recently granted another $24.4 million worth of funding to 26 public charging projects in the state.

In the face of an uncertain national policy landscape, Pennsylvania’s decision to press ahead with significant NEVI-backed investment signals a clear commitment to long-term transport electrification in the state.

PennDOT Secretary, Mike Carroll, commented:

“Community charging is the culmination of an extraordinary effort by the Shapiro Administration to deliver accessible EV infrastructure to PA travelers. We’re excited to bring EV chargers to neighborhoods around the Commonwealth.”
