- UK service station operator, Moto Hospitality, this week launched its own in-house public EV charging network, called Moto CHARGE.
- With charging speeds of up to 400kW, the new charging network is set to be one of the fastest available in the UK.
- The first Moto CHARGE location has opened at Toddington North services, on the M1 Motorway, with additional locations set to come to Moto service areas across the UK’s motorway network in the future.
A new player joins the competitive UK public EV charging game
The move marks a new strategy for Moto Hospitality. Until now, public charging at its motorway service areas has been provided by third party CPOs such as GRIDSERVE and Tesla, helping to bring over 1,000 charging bays to its motorway service areas so far. Even with this new charging network launch, Moto has confirmed that third party CPOs will remain at its various service areas, giving EV drivers a wider choice on where they choose to charge up.
The Moto CHARGE network will use ABB A400 chargers, which offer charging speeds of up to 400kW – enough to take full advantage of the fastest charging electric cars on the market. This will also make it some of the fastest public charging available in the UK, matching the 400kW charge speeds offered at some Fastned locations. This first location is priced at 85p per kWh, according to Zapmap, putting it on par with CPOs such as GRIDSERVE. Payment will be available through both contactless payment methods, charge cards, and roaming networks.
Moto says the new chargers support its ‘continued commitment to making Moto the most dependable place to charge on the motorway’. This location at Toddington services is just the first of many, with more Moto CHARGE locations set to come to its service areas in 2026 and beyond.
The UK has set a national target of 300,000 public chargers live by 2030, and motorway locations such as this will play a key part in achieving that goal – ensuring that EV journeys across the UK, no matter how long, have ample charging infrastructure along the route.
