- The Georgia Department of Transport has awarded over $24.4 million USD worth of funding to public-private partnerships to further grow public EV charging infrastructure across the state.
- The funding comes as part of the second round of Georgia’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, a federal funding scheme which is helping to deploy EV chargers right across the country.
- With electric vehicle adoption growing across Georgia, the 26 new rapid EV charging sites set to launch as a result of this funding will be a welcome addition.
More fast EV charging sites come to Georgia in latest NEVI funding round
In a move that will fast track the growth of Georgia’s public charging infrastructure, the Georgia State Transportation Board has approved projects for the state’s second round of NEVI funding. The $24.4 million worth of funding will go towards 26 separate public charging projects placed along the state’s designated ‘alternative fuel corridors’, and be delivered in public-private partnerships with pbulic charging providers such as PowerUp America and Love’s Travel Stops.
The selected private partners will be responsible for the full lifecycle of the charging stations, ensuring long-term operational excellence. Each chosen site will feature at least four DC rapid charging points, capable of fully recharging compatible EVs in as little as 20 minutes. The awarded partners and locations were selected on a number of criteria, including site readiness, charging reliability, grid capacity, community impact, and long-term operations.
Georgia is emerging as a key player within the USA’s EV sector. In addition to these public charging investments, the state was also chosen as the location for Rivian’s new EV factory. Once live in 2028, this factory will help boost production capacity for the manufacturer’s upcoming Rivian R2 and R3 models.
Governor of Georgia, Brian P. Kemp, commented:
“Our robust infrastructure network has set Georgia apart in attracting business, promoting travel, and providing reliable transportation for all Georgians. This investment will help further secure our status as a national leader in innovation and infrastructure for years to come. We appreciate Georgia DOT for fulfilling the state’s commitment to a robust, reliable fast-charging network that meets federal standards and serves communities across Georgia.”
Georgia Department of Transport Commissioner, Russell R. McMurry, added:
“Georgia continues to lead the way in electric mobility by investing in infrastructure that strengthens our transportation network, promotes economic development and improves the experience for EV drivers statewide.
Georgia DOT is proud to do our part to implement this federal investment responsibly, closing gaps in the statewide network and ensuring that fast, reliable charging is available where Georgians need it most.”
