- Around 1,000 more public EV chargers are set to be rolled out across North London’s Barnet Council area, in partnership with CPO char.gy.
- These on-street chargers will help expand EV infrastructure in the area further, whilst also supporting the EV transition for those unable to charge at home.
- The move was made possible with £800,000 worth of funding from the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (which covers 60% of the total cost of the project), with char.gy funding the remaining 40%.
Barnet residents to benefit from mass on-street EV charging scheme
The first 500 of these new on-street EV chargers have begun, being rolled out over the next three months, whilst the remaining 500 coming out of this project will be installed over the next three years. Upon completion, this will bring the total number of EV chargepoints in Barnet to around 2,500, highlighting the scale of this new installation. Barnet is already the biggest borough in London when it comes to public charging energy demand, with a strong level of EV adoption already evident.
The new chargepoints will be integrated into existing lampposts, with installations typically completed in under two hours, allowing for their rapid rollout. Operating at charge speeds of up to 5kW, the public chargers will be perfectly suited for overnight charging, in combination with char.gy’s £0.39/kWh night tariff.
On a wider national picture, it’s yet another positive move for the UK’s public charging infrastructure, which is growing at record speed this year. The recent removal of EV charging ‘red tape’ could help infrastructure to grow even faster, with those steps also helping to boost electric vehicle adoption.
John Lewis, CEO at char.gy, commented:
“Barnet is showing real leadership with this rollout – making it easier for people to make the switch to electric by ensuring charging is available right outside their homes.
We’re excited to be delivering one of our largest borough-wide installations yet and to bring our experience to the streets of Barnet. By working closely with councils like this, we’re making EV charging simple, fair, and accessible to all.”
Councillor Alan Schneiderman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, added:
“Lots more electric vehicle charge points is great news for Barnet residents. It’s another step in the right direction as we move towards becoming a Net Zero borough by 2042.
We know that sustainable, zero emissions vehicles will play a key role in achieving our goals as we work with residents and partners to make Barnet a cleaner, greener borough for all.”
