Kempower, DP World, and Kalmar introduce ultra-high-power innovations to charge the ports of the future

  • Europe’s first 500A charging system charges electric straddle carriers in 45 minutes, improving efficiency and reducing emissions.
  • Modular, compact design supports continuous use, aligning with DP World’s carbon neutrality target of 2040 and net-zero 2050.
  • Collaboration between DP World, Kempower, and Kalmar aims to decarbonise ports and scale this innovative technology further.

Ultra-high-power charging system developed by Kempower, DP World, and Kalmar paves the way for sustainable port operations

DP World, Kempower, and Kalmar have introduced Europe’s first ultra-high-power 500A charging system for ports. The system, now operational at DP World London Gateway, enables electric straddle carriers to charge fully in just 45 minutes.

This cutting-edge solution is slashing emissions for eight new Kalmar electric carriers. Kalmar is already embedded in the effort to decarbonise ports. It announced an innovative charging trial in Sweden just weeks ago.

The charging system features a modular design for reliability. It can support up to four hours of continuous operation, which aligns with driver breaks. It is also compact, fitting into existing port infrastructure with minimal adjustments.

The project includes eight liquid-cooled charging Satellites, eight 550 kW Power Units, and Kempower’s ChargEye management system. The first station went live in May 2024, and the entire system is now fully operational.

DP World aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Electrifying straddle carriers is a key step toward these goals.

Andrew Bowen, UK COO at DP World, commented:

“We are delighted to work with Kempower on this project, alongside our longstanding partner Kalmar, which builds on five years of work at London Gateway to successfully convert our hybrid straddle carrier fleet into a fully electric operation.

This latest partnership to deliver green investment is a part of DP World’s goal to use innovative technology to become a net zero logistics organisation by 2050 while providing our customers with the best possible end-to-end logistics solutions.”

Kempower sees the project as a breakthrough in expanding their port solutions. Both partners are already exploring future opportunities to scale up the system. The new system joins Kempower’s MegaWatt charging solution, massively upgrading the freight world for optimal efficiency.
