Toyota has announced that they will be bringing two all-electric cars and a hybrid to the US market in 2021. At present, the company hasn’t announced what type of vehicle these will be or how much they will cost. Currently, Toyota hasn’t launched an all-electric car outside of China.
These new models are part of a large-scale electrified-vehicle push by the Japanese carmaker. Toyota says they want 40 percent of the models they offer in the US to be electrified by 2025. This will include battery electric vehicles, hybrids and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, along with hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Toyota plans to increase this to 70 percent by 2030.
Toyota has been a popular choice in the US when it comes to the alternative fuel vehicle market where the company has over 40 percent of the share. It currently has 75 percent of the fuel cell market and 64 percent of the hybrid and plug-in market. Toyota hasn’t been as quick as many brands in the auto industry when it comes to battery electric vehicles but this looks set to change over the coming decade.
Between now and 2025, Toyota and Lexus models, globally, will have an electrified option. Toyota is also developing its own dedicated battery electric vehicles platform called-TNGA, which offers flexibility for all drive configurations. These initiatives are further steps toward achieving the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, introduced in 2015, the most demanding and most inspiring environmental commitments Toyota has ever made.
Bob Carter, Toyota North America’s executive vice president of sales, said: “We continue to be leaders in electrification that began with our pioneering introduction of the Prius nearly 25 years ago. Toyota’s new electrified product offerings will give customers multiple choices of powertrain that best suits their needs.”
