EV charging in style: New Porsche charging lounge sets the standard

  • EV charging has taken a premium step up at Porsche’s latest ‘Porsche Charging Lounge’, opened in North Germany.
  • The new opening in Evendorf just off the A7 autobahn is the ninth lounge to be opened by the manufacturer, joining existing locations in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
  • Porsche’s longstanding luxury positioning in the market has carried over into its Macan and Taycan EVs, and its charging lounges are no different, combining some of the highest charging speeds on the market with airport lounge-style facilities.

Porsche sets a new luxury standard in public EV charging

The new location consists of six high-power EV charging points, with speeds of up to 400kW available on each charge point, even when all six chargers are being used simultaneously. This speed allows a Porsche Taycan to be recharged from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, perfectly time matching the on-site facilities and narrowing the ‘filling up’ gap between EV and ICE.

Porsche has aimed to create a relaxed ambience to take the stress out of EV charging at these lounges, and its latest location is no different. For the warmer months, outdoor covered seating areas are available, whilst the inside facilities include comfortable sitting areas, water and coffee dispensers, toilets, and a vending machine containing drinks and snacks.

We reported on Porsche’s initial plans to create luxury charging hubs back in 2023, and while two years on, it may only be limited to just nine locations, it’s still clear that the brand wants to roll these out on a much larger scale to entice more customers. Porsche itself hasn’t given any details on future countries and locations for additional sites, but the UK’s Banbury Guardian newspaper recently highlighted a planning application submitted by Porsche GB to create a luxury charging lounge located just a stones throw from the major M40 motorway.

Outside of these lounge locations, Porsche EV drivers already have seamless access to over 900,000 charging points from other CPOs across Europe, through its Porsche Charging Service roaming network.

For now, Porsche’s charging lounges remain exclusive to owners of fully electric or plug-in hybrid Porsches, creating another selling point for premium EV buyers to choose the brand over similar luxury-focused rivals. However, Porsche’s concept still sets a blueprint for other CPOs to follow, taking the public EV charging experience a step above your standard roadside charging point.
