Nissan Leaf – Chevrolet Equinox EV – Fiat 500e – Hyundai Kona Electric
Nissan Leaf
The pioneer of the mass-market EV industry remains, for now, the most affordable way into a new electric vehicle. The third-generation Nissan Leaf is still holding the line on price, reducing entry barriers to EV ownership for USA buyers.
Starting at an MSRP of around $29,990 USD, the Leaf is undeniably the cheapest electric car on this list. Despite its low price, there’s no compromises when it comes to range, with even the entry level S+ trim offering an EPA-estimated range of 303 miles thanks to a large 75 kWh battery.
This entry model still packs a decent list of standard equipment, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, remote climate control, a 28-inch driver display, and more. With the front-driven electric motor offering up 214 horsepower, it’s got more than enough power to easily merge onto highways too.
Chevrolet Equinox EV
For those in the market for a compact SUV that’s also fully-electric, Chevrolet’s latest Equinox EV is another strong choice. Prices for the entry-level LT1 start at $35,100 USD, and it’s no surprise that this car is Chevrolet’s best selling electric car.
This EV delivers an EPA-estimated range of up to 319 miles, making it the longest range EV available at this price point. It’s a no-compromise replacement for a similarly sized gasoline option, offering ample space inside and strong on-road performance thanks to its 220 horsepower electric motor.
For the 2026 model year, the Equinox EV also comes with a native NACS charging port, further future proofing this American-made EV by offering a seamless gateway to Tesla’s Supercharger network.
Fiat 500e
With its iconic European styling and small form factor, the Fiat 500e is the style icon on this cheap EV list, offering bags of personality for an MSRP starting price of $30,500 USD. With an EPA-rated range of around 153 miles, the 500e is more suited for urban driving, as opposed to the mile-munching capabilities of other cars on this list such as the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Equinox EV.
DC fast charging capability means the Fiat 500e can also be recharged in a flash, on the correct public charger – allowing for 40 miles of range to be added in as little as five minutes.
Hyundai Kona Electric
The Kona Electric is another affordable compact SUV on this list, offering a compelling blend of range, tech, and utility in a segment-favorite crossover package.
The entry-level Kona Electric SE starts at approximately $32,795 USD. With an EPA estimated range of 261 miles, and standard equipment such as Hyundai’s dual-screen infotainment setup, connectivity features, and a spacious cabin, this is a great affordable all rounder.

2027 Chevrolet Bolt
The original Chevrolet Bolt was one of the first properly affordable EVs to hit the US market, and this new model, arriving next year, will maintain that theme of affordability.
The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt will start at $29,990 USD, offering a range of 255 miles in a compact form. A maximum recharging speed of 150kW will also be on offer, allowing it to take advantage of some of the fastest public charging infrastructure in the US.
Later down the line, Chevrolet will release an even cheaper Bolt starting at $28,995 USD, once again cementing the vehicle’s position as the most affordable EV in the country.
