- Following the announcement of a partnership in early June between North London’s Barnet Council and public charging provider char.gy, the partnership has made impressive progress, with over 300 on-street chargers installed in the borough in just six weeks.
- The achievement comes as Barnet Council looks to roll out up to 1,000 new lamppost EV chargers, with the help of char.gy.
- Once the partnership is complete, Barnet Council will have over 2,500 public EV chargers, helping to stimulate further EV adoption in the area.
300 on-street chargers installed in Barnet in six weeks
The rapid rate of installation is down to char.gy’s regular ability to install over 500 charge points every month, which is in part due to the lamppost-based charging solution which Barnet Council is receiving. This charging solution can be installed into an existing lamppost in under two hours, without the need for any additional grid connections.
The milestone means Barnet alone now has 1,500 charge points. In the next phase of the partnership between char.gy and Barnet Council, around 40 legacy charge points dotted around the borough will be replaced with modern char.gy units, improving charging performance and convenience for EV drivers in the area.
With a significant proportion of Barnet residents not having access to off-street parking, street-based charging infrastructure such as this project will be a key step in enabling all drivers to make the transition to EVs.
John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, commented:
“Rolling out 300 charge points in just six weeks is a remarkable pace and reflects the strength of our partnership with Barnet Council. This is one of the fastest large-scale on-street EV deployments in the country, and it’s just the beginning. We’re proud to be delivering real momentum for EV adoption at scale, and in the communities that need it most.”
Cllr Alan Schneiderman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change at Barnet Council, added:
“Installing 300 charge points in just six weeks shows how serious we and char.gy are about tackling climate change and making it easier for residents to go electric. This rollout is a major step toward our goal of becoming a Net Zero borough by 2042. By supporting the switch to electric vehicles, we’re also helping to improve air quality across Barnet, making our streets healthier and safer for everyone.”
