Audi’s smallest and cheapest EV yet arriving this year

Audi confirms the return of the A2 model name as the fully-electric A2 e-tron, after a 20-plus year hiatus.
  • After Audi hinted at the return of the A2 with a restomod concept back in 2024, Audi has now teased a silhouette of the Audi A2 e-tron, now confirming that the car is set to be unveiled in late 2026.
  • The news marks the return of the A2 model for the first time in over 20 years, with the original model being revolutionary for its full aluminium space frame, making it incredibly light and fuel efficient.
  • This new fully-electric iteration will look to follow in the original’s footsteps of efficiency, and the silhouette teaser suggests it will follow a similar body shape and design style to the original.

Audi A2 set to return in fully electric form this year

Audi has now confirmed that the A2 e-tron is a reality, with the full reveal set to take place in the autumn. The A2 e-tron will be both the smallest electric car produced by Audi, and if pricing of the original A2 is anything to go by, it’ll also be the most affordable electric car sold by the brand once it goes on sale.

No technical details or pricing have been revealed on the A2 e-tron at this stage, but we do now know a number of things from Audi’s announcement. Audi will be targeting customers valuing high efficiency, digital connectivity, and easy manoeuvrability in urban areas. In that sense, it seems that the new A2 e-tron will carry many of the same attributes as previous small Audis.

The A2 e-tron will be built at Audi’s facility in Ingolstadt. Other EVs currently rolling out of this plant include the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron. The A2 e-tron is likely to share the same EV platform as other small models currently being produced within the wider Volkswagen Group.

Below is a reminder of what the original Audi A2 looked like. This car, when offered in 1.2 TDI ‘3L’ form, could achieve over 100mpg in real world driving, making it one of the most fuel efficient cars of its period. The A2 e-tron, meanwhile, has the opportunity to be one of the most energy efficient EVs on the market with its similarly streamlined shape.

Audi CEO, Gernot Döllner, commented on the A2 e-tron:

“We’ve listened. Our customers want electric mobility that impresses in everyday life. The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver exactly that – efficient, compact, and confident. We’re making entry into the electric Audi world easier and more relevant than ever.”
