Hot on the heels of Citroen’s fully-electric 2CV concept revealed at this year’s Paris Motor Show, the manufacturer has now also taken the wraps off a commercial variant. However, unlike the passenger 2CV EV which Citroen aims to bring to market in 2028, the 2CV Fourgonnette remains a ‘design study’ for now.
Citroen mulls bringing lightweight commercial EV to market
The 2CV Fourgonnette concept takes its name from the original 20th-century model, which proved a popular commercial choice, particularly in its home market of France, thanks to its rugged dependability and affordable price. The new electric concept follows the same ideals, with a focus on the essentials and ease of use. It also brings far more character and style than you’d typically expect from an electric commercial vehicle.
Citroen is yet to confirm whether the 2CV Fourgonnette will make it into production, but it’s likely that his concept will help the manufacturer gauge interest. If it does reach production, it would likely become one of the most affordable electric commercial vehicles on sale. With the passenger 2CV expected to start at around €15,000, a production Fourgonnette could realistically come in below at least €20,000.
Within Citroen’s electric commercial vehicle lineup, the 2CV Fourgonnette would sit above the cargo variant of its Citroen Ami, but still remain more compact than options like the Citroen e-Berlingo van. It’s not the only manufacturer considering bringing ultra-compact commercial EVs to market either. A couple of years ago, Renault revealed its similarly-sized and stylish Estafette Concept, though we’re yet to see that model become a production reality.
Xavier Chardon, CEO of Citroen and DS Automobiles, said on the new concept:
“The 2 CV Fourgonnette was more than just a workhorse. It was part of everyday life. Simple, ingenious and accessible, it above all possessed something few commercial vehicles have: a soul. That is the spirit we are bringing back to life today. Because being useful should never mean being ordinary.”
