US EV charging network, EVgo, is set to deploy some of the country’s fastest public chargers yet, this week announcing a ‘next-generation’ charging system that will be capable of delivering charging power of up to 750kW.
Faster public charging on the way for the US
EVgo has given a first look at its 750kW EV charger, currently under development at the company’s Innovation Lab in El Segundo, California. Longtime partner Delta Electronics is supporting the co-development of the hardware, with the final charger design set to be revealed in 2027.
The move makes EVgo one of very few American charging networks to design its own chargers, rather than relying entirely on third-party units. The company says the design draws on data from more than 10 million charging sessions a year across its 1.8 million customer accounts.
Other changes on this new ultra-fast charging unit include improved cable flexibility, a touch-free payment interface, and improved reliability. Each charger will be fitted with NACS connectors, which more and more EV manufacturers are adopting as the standard within the North American market.
Once deployed, these chargers will become some of the fastest available to passenger EVs in the US. The current benchmark is the Gravity Charging Center in New York, which offers up to 500kW. No electric passenger car on sale in North America can even accept 750kW yet though, so EVgo is clearly building this new charging unit with future models in mind.
