World EV Day™ has introduced a new ‘5 Cities’ initiative, ahead of its seventh edition on Wednesday 9 September 2026. The programme will see five cities each year officially recognised as World EV Day cities, with each partnership led by a city authority working alongside five corporate sponsors.
New format pairs city authorities with corporate sponsors
Under the initiative, participating cities are positioned as official World EV Day cities, receiving branding rights, a digital media asset pack, and promotion across World EV Day’s social channels, including LinkedIn. Cities also get dedicated positioning on the 5 Cities page of the World EV Day website.
In return, cities are expected to deliver an official event supported by the city authority, alongside a business-facing event and a separate consumer or driver-facing event, all delivered in partnership with the five corporate sponsors attached to that city.
The initiative adds a formal civic dimension to a campaign that has, until now, been driven primarily through corporate partnerships and social media reach. Since the day’s founding in 2020, it has grown considerably, achieving over 200 million X impressions across 119 countries in 2023, and has previously attracted political attention, including discussion in UK parliament.
This year’s campaign runs under the theme “Switching Electric: driving down the cost of motoring”, reflecting the wider focus on EV affordability as the market continues to mature. 5 Cities gives that theme a local anchor, with city authorities expected to translate the global campaign into local events.
