Nissan has reached an electrification milestone in the UK, with a customer this week taking delivery of what was the 100,000th fully electric vehicle to be sold by Nissan in the UK. The achievement reflects Nissan’s longstanding position as an electric car seller in this country. It’s been selling EVs here for 15 years now, after bringing the original Leaf to Britain back in 2011. That was the first mass-produced electric car to be sold in the country, save for smaller-volume EVs in the 2000s such as the Mitsubishi i-MiEV and REVA G-Wiz.
The 100,000th EV to be sold by Nissan was an example of its new Micra, finished in Rebel Red and handed over to a couple at a Nissan dealership in Chorley, Lancashire. Fittingly, for the 100,000 milestone built on converting many British drivers to electric cars, it was the couple’s first EV.
The milestone comes at a busy time for Nissan’s electric vehicle lineup in the UK. Alongside the Micra, Nissan also sells the Ariya electric SUV, as well as the recently updated third-generation Leaf, which arrives in showrooms later this summer. All three also qualify for the Government’s Electric Car Grant, offering discounts of up to £3,750. On the commercial vehicle side, Nissan also offers two electric van models right now: the Townstar EV and the larger Interstar-e.
James Taylor, Managing Director of Nissan Motor GB, commented:
“We are incredibly proud to have led the way in automotive electrification for 15 years and it’s wonderful to have notched up 100,000 EV sales in the UK. Between the new MICRA and LEAF and the just-updated ARIYA, plus our two electric LCVs, Nissan has a strong electric line-up, with every model delivering affordability, innovation and everyday practicality. We hope Mr and Mrs Ainsworth will enjoy many happy years of motoring in their new car.”
Gillian Ainsworth, who took delivery of the milestone car, said:
“We are delighted with our new MICRA. It’s our first electric vehicle and we love everything about it. It drives beautifully, it’s comfortable and spacious, and it looks great. We were attracted to the MICRA partly because of the positive reviews we read and we’ve not been disappointed. Many congratulations to Nissan on selling their 100,000th electric vehicle in the UK.”
