Stellantis has announced the launch of its ‘E-Car’ project, a series of new, small, affordable electric cars which are set to enter production at its Pomigliano plant in Italy from 2028.
Despite electric SUVs and crossovers being one of the most popular EV choices right now for European customers, there’s clearly an untapped appetite for smaller and more affordable EVs, as evidenced with the growing popularity of cars such as the Renault 5.
These new electric models will likely sit at an even lower price point than current small EVs within the Stellantis family, such as the Fiat Grande Panda Electric and Citroen e-C3.
Stellantis says the new models will be powered by ‘world-class BEV technologies’, and be developed with ‘selected partners’ to achieve an ‘accelerated time-to-market’. No further details were given on that final point, but it suggests Stellantis could team up with another OEM, perhaps in China, to speed up development. A reminder – Stellantis already has partnerships with two Chinese OEMs: Dongfeng and Leapmotor.
With production set to take place at one facility, the models in question are likely to be identical or very similar when it comes to the technology underneath – but it remains to be seen which brands or badges Stellantis will utilise for these new E-Cars.
Late last year, the European Commission proposed a new ‘M1E’ category for small electric cars under 4.2 metres in length, which would give manufacturers increased credits towards their EU emissions targets and open up the ability for member states to easily identify these vehicles and give them targeted incentives such as reduced parking costs or free access to city centres. We can expect Stellantis to ensure that its E-Car lineup meets these qualifications.
Stellantis CEO, Antonio Filosa, commented:
“The E-Car is a concept that finds its natural match in the small car success that runs deep in our European Stellantis DNA. Our customers are calling for a revival of small, stylish vehicles, proudly produced in Europe, which are also affordable and environmentally friendly. Stellantis is answering their call with exciting new models for multiple brands. Production is expected to start in 2028 in our Pomigliano (Italy) plant.”
