GM continues its vehicle-to-home EV push

With 12 GM models now supporting V2H capabilities, is the synergy between home energy and electric vehicles growing?
  • North American OEM General Motors is emerging as one of the leaders in bringing vehicle-to-home (V2H) capabilities to its EV portfolio.
  • 12 General Motors EV models now support vehicle-to-home technology across various model years, allowing their owners to save even more money on their home charging bills – and become more resilient against blackouts.
  • With increasingly volatile oil prices, solutions such as vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid are set to play a significant role in an electric vehicle future.

12 GM models now support bidirectional vehicle-to-home charging

12 General Motors EV models, across brands including Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac, now support bidirectional vehicle-to-home charging, marking a clear shift from EVs being simple energy consumers to becoming active participants in the wider energy ecosystem. By enabling stored energy in the vehicle’s battery to be discharged back into a home, owners can offset peak electricity costs or maintain power during grid outages.

This capability is particularly relevant as extreme weather events place growing strain on energy infrastructure. In these scenarios, an EV equipped with V2H effectively becomes a backup generator on wheels – but without the noise and emissions of a gas or diesel generator. For households already investing in rooftop solar, the value proposition becomes even stronger, allowing excess daytime generation to be stored in the vehicle and used when needed.

GM’s rollout also signals a broader industry trend toward bidirectional charging capabilities becoming a standard, no-cost feature on new EVs, rather than an optional addon. Other OEMs such as Nissan and Tesla are also rolling out similar technology across some of their models.

As energy firms begin to explore how they can implement V2H and V2G capabilities into their own platforms, the opportunity for EV owners to make money off the battery stored in their vehicle also gets greater. GM’s new energy division, launched in 2022, also allows for further cost savings through the purchase of home battery storage units.
