- European CPO IONITY has opened two new ultra-rapid EV charging sites in the remote Scottish Highlands, bringing some much needed electrons to the region.
- With charging power of up to 400kW available, these new locations can take full advantage of some of the fastest charging electric cars on the market.
- The expansion now means IONITY operates 12 public charging sites across Scotland.
400kW EV charging comes to the Scottish Highlands
The two new charging locations are located both in Fort William, near to the popular tourist attraction of Ben Nevis, and one in the Inverness neighbourhood of Inshes. Both are located close to major A roads, which will make them a popular charging destination for passing as well as local EV drivers.
Andreas Atkins, Country Manager for UK and Ireland at IONITY, commented:
“The opening of our eleventh and twelfth sites in Scotland marks an important milestone in expanding high-powered charging across the Highlands. By strengthening our network in key locations such as Fort William and Inverness, we are helping make electric travel across the UK more convenient and reliable for both residents and visitors.”
The Inshes charging location is also located close to a nearby primary school. The launch of the charging station was used as a chance to educate pupils on how electric vehicles, and specifically EV charging, work, and it comes as topics such as sustainability and renewable energy become increasingly integrated into school curriculums.
Meg Snedden, Head Teacher at Inshes Primary School commented:
“Having such an important renewable energy project right beside our school has created a valuable real-world learning opportunity for our pupils. Making sustainable travel a reality within their local community is so important in normalising the technology for younger generations.
The children appreciated the opportunity to speak with the IONITY team and learn more about the new charging hub. They have been learning about renewable energy and exploring sustainability in class, so being able to see how electric vehicle charging works in practice has helped bring that learning to life.”
With 400kW speeds, these IONITY chargers offer some of the fastest charging times available on the UK’s public charging network, matching the 400kW speeds offered by other CPOs in the country such as Fastned. Even faster charging speeds are set to come to the UK in the future, however, with BYD set to roll out 1,500kW FLASH Charge technology across Europe soon.
