New Mercedes-Benz GLB revealed as fully-electric seven-seater

Electric comes first for the latest Mercedes-Benz GLB, with a claimed range of over 390 miles and the option of seven seats.
  • Mercedes-Benz has revealed the second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLB, initially being launched in fully-electric form only.
  • Based on the same modern 800-volt architecture as the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV, the GLB will offer an impressive battery range of up to 392 miles, making it a capable long-distance EV.
  • The option of a seven-seat configuration positions the GLB in a small but growing market of seven-seat EVs, helping electric cars to appeal to an even wider audience.

Electric comes first for Mercedes’ new GLB

Whilst the first generation Mercedes-Benz GLB was only offered with an ICE powertrain initially, it’s the other way round for this new generation. The fully-electric powertrain will be available at launch, followed by hybrids later down the line.

The previous generation Mercedes-Benz GLB was also offered an electric variant under a different model name, the EQB. However, this new naming strategy outlines how EVs are no longer an ‘alternative’ choice, but a default option that is just as capable as its ICE-powered cousins. That’s also reflected in the electric GLB’s performance. The previous EQB offered a maximum range of 321 miles, with the 392 miles range on this new model marking a significant improvement in battery technology in just a few years.

The new electric GLB will also have a class-leading towing capacity of up to two tonnes, making it one of the best electric cars for towing.

Mercedes is also keen to highlight the country-crossing capabilities that the GLB’s significant battery range will allow for. The claimed range of 392 miles is enough to allow drivers to take on routes such as Rome to Venice in Europe, or Denver to Salt Lake City in the US, on a single charge. When it comes to recharging on the go, the GLB also has that covered: with a 320kW recharging speed allowing up to 161 miles of range to be added in as little as 10 minutes.

There’s no official word on pricing yet, but later down the line, the GLB lineup will also include a more ‘entry-level’ fully-electric option – presumably sacrificing range for a lower price tag.

Mathias Geisen, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, commented:

“The all-new GLB is built for everyday life. Available as a 5-or 7-seater, it adapts effortlessly to our customers’ needs. With more space, a new design, greater comfort, and even the ability to tow a full-size caravan, it proves that an electric compact SUV can be as versatile as it is capable.”
