The Toyota Group and Tier 1 supplier, Hexagon Purus, have joined forces to launch the new Tern brand of heavy-duty electric trucks, with Hino Trucks named as its exclusive US distributor.

Glenn Ellis, President and CEO of Hino Trucks, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership;

“Our collaboration with Hexagon Purus introduces a highly reliable Class 8, 4×2 tractor option into the electric truck market, catering to a wide range of applications,” he explained. “We are excited to be the exclusive distributor for Tern with an initial distribution focus in California, where fleet electrification is imperative.”

The new Tern RC8 electric truck boasts a 68,000 lb. GVWR, a powerful 680 peak horsepower electric motor (494 continuous), and a 200-mile range. It can charge from 0-80% in under two hours at 240 kW. The truck’s energy comes from dual Hexagon Purus Gen3 269 kWh battery packs in a 750-volt, 538 kWh setup.

Built on Hino’s reliable XL Series 4×2 chassis, the Tern RC8 integrates Hexagon Purus’ cutting-edge zero-emission technology. This innovative truck features proprietary battery systems, auxiliary modules, and power modules. It leverages a U.S.-assembled Hino chassis, Dana’s efficient Zero-8 e-Axle, and battery cells supplied by Panasonic Energy.

This launch aligns with California’s Advanced Clean Fleets regulation, providing fleets with a powerful option to decarbonise. The Tern RC8 is ideal for metro-regional routes, food and beverage logistics, and similar applications, where its tight turning radius and popular 4×2 chassis offer significant practical benefits.

Morten Holum, CEO of Hexagon Purus highlighted the practicality and performance of the Tern RC8;

“Tern RC8 delivers the comfort, reliability and safety that drivers and fleets want, and it’s purpose-built to be a practical truck for operators integrating zero-emission trucks into their fleets.”

The introduction of the Tern brand marks a transformative leap for both companies and the commercial trucking industry, driving towards a zero-emission future without sacrificing power or performance.
