On Telsa’s official Battery Day, where Elon Musk talked of cutting the price of electric car batteries by half over the coming three years, he also announced the launch of the new Model S Plaid. In the world of electric vehicles this is one of the true supercars and is up there with the recent launches of the Lucid Air Dream Edition and Porsche’s Taycan when it comes to impressive numbers.
The new Model S Plaid will offer a ridiculous 1,100bhp which will see it speedily drive from 0-62mph (0-100kph) in under two seconds, with a staggering top speed of 200mph (322kph). Plus, it will have an impressive range of 520 miles. Tesla say that the powertrain in the Plaid uses three electric motors to achieve such figures.
For comparison the Lucid Air Dream Edition that was launched recently offers 1080bhp which sees it hit 0-62mph (0-100kph) in 2.5 seconds, with a 517-mile range. The Porsche Taycan Turbo S offers 751bhp that takes it from 0-62mph (0-100kph) in 2.8 seconds, with a 254-mile range, so the Model S Plaid is a truly astonishing wolf in sheep’s clothing.
During the announcement of his new supercar Musk said he had his test team drive the Model S Plaid around California’s famous Laguna Seca Raceway motor circuit. They managed to set a lap time of 01:30:30 seconds but believe they can take a few seconds off this figure. It’s definitely an impressive time and we’re sure even the biggest petrolhead out there will find it hard not to be impressed by the performance of the all-electric zero emission Model S Plaid.
The Plaid Model S will cost around $140,000, that’s roughly £110,000 at today’s exchange rate, and will be available at the end of 2021.
