Lucid Air set to be fastest charging electric car

Lucid Motors have announced that their new Lucid Air electric car will feature the fastest charging battery available on the market. The Air, which is priced at $52,500 (£40,190) and due to launch on 9 September, will feature a charging rate of up to 300kW delivering 20 miles (32km) per minute, so it can offer a phenomenal 300 miles (480km) of range from just 20 minutes of charging.

For comparison, the fastest of Elon Musk’s Tesla range offers a charging rate of 250kW using their V3 Supercharger. This delivers a charge rate of 15 miles per minute.

This follows the recent record breaking news from Lucid Motors when they announced that the Air will have a world beating range of over 500 miles from a single charge. This combination looks set to be a game changer for many potential consumers.

The North American company have achieved this phenomenal charging speed with an ultra-high 900V+ electrical architecture, custom lithium-ion battery cells, a highly sophisticated battery and thermal management system, and exceptional powertrain efficiency. Here efficiency is key because it plays a direct and invaluable role in the Lucid Air’s charging rate, determining the rate of mileage as distinct from the rate of energy flow.

The Lucid Air is designed to Combined Charging System (CCS) standards making it compatible with any open direct current fast-charging station. It automatically boosts voltage whenever needed to charge at the fastest possible rate at any location.

An added bonus to Lucid Air owners who take US delivery will receive three years of complimentary charging at Electrify America’s extensive nationwide network of ultrafast charging stations that currently boasts 2,000 plus individual chargers.
