Hyundai have just launched their futuristic looking IONIQ 5 crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It sits between a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a hatchback in size offering 588 litres of storage space between the front and rear. The IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s first model in their new IONIQ range of dedicated battery electric vehicles.
This new generation of vehicles from the Korean carmaker is built upon Hyundai’s dedicated battery electric vehicle architecture called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This enables it to have unique proportions on an elongated wheelbase. The exterior features clean lines with minimalistic structures and the IONIQ 5 has a clamshell shaped bonnet that spans the entire width of the car. This minimises panel gaps to deliver a clean high-tech aesthetic.
The 3,000-mm wheelbase IONIQ5 features neat looking LED lighting located in the bumpers that showcase its signature Parametric Pixels that give it a unique jewel-like design. The makes for distinctive front headlamps with their 256 cubic pixels. This styling is carried over to the rear in a unique rectangular signature. The exterior is finished off with aerodynamically optimised 20-inch diameter wheels that give the IONIQ 5 a subtle flair without looking too boy-racer.
Hyundai offers the IONIQ 5 with an eco-friendly solar roof. This supports the vehicle’s electric power source by collecting energy and transferring it to the battery pack, improving efficiency. The solar roof can prevent battery discharge while providing an additional driving range.
Hyundai have used sustainable eco-materials on the spacious modern-looking interior, such as sugar cane which is used on the headliner, carpet and seat covers. This not only looks good but is fully recyclable. They have also used recycled PET bottles, natural wool yarns, eco-processed leather with plant-based extracts and bio paint with plant extracts.
The large flat floor area not only looks minimalist and modern but provides the seats with plenty of movement and ample space to recline. The IONIQ 5 also features a centre console that can be moved up to 140mm (5.5 inches) throughout the cabin area. In the cockpit, Hyundai have fitted a 31cm (12.3-inch) infotainment system that is seamlessly integrated into the 31cm (12.3-inch) cluster for a clean almost space-age look.
Hyundai will offer customers two battery pack options, either 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh. Also, there will be the choice of two electric motor layouts, either with a rear-wheel-drive or an all-wheel-drive. The IONIQ 5 features an 800-volt battery that delivers an impressive range of up to 311 miles (500km) from a single charge. The top-end 72.6 kWh all-wheel-drive version is a nippy little mover with a top speed of 115mph (185kph) and can accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100kph) in just 5.2 seconds.
Charging is equally impressive supporting both 400-volt and 800-volt charging infrastructures. The platform offers 800-volt charging capability as standard, along with 400-volt charging, without the need for additional components or adapters. The IONIQ 5 can charge up to 80 percent in just 18 minutes with a 350-kW charger. It can also be charged to cover 62 miles (100km) in under five minutes with a fast charger making for an easy life on the road, especially for the time-constrained.
In selected countries, IONIQ 5 customers will be able to enjoy a free one-year subscription to IONITY, which forms part of Hyundai’s new pan-European integrated public charging service, Charge myHyundai. Charge myHyundai offers access to over 200,000 charging points across Europe. Users can enjoy a streamlined one-payment solution via a single card or an app for additional peace of mind. Customers can easily find available charging stations using the AVN system.
Orders for the new IONIQ 5 will start this summer and with prices starting from £45,000.
SangYup Lee, senior vice president and head of Hyundai Global Design Centre, said: “A new mobility experience for the next generation—this was the mission from the first day we began this project, to look ahead towards the horizon, but stay fundamentally Hyundai. IONIQ 5 is the new definition of timeless, providing a common thread linking our past to the present and future.”
