RBW Classic Electric Cars, who are based in Streetly, Staffordshire, are to build a limited run of 30 classic MGBs all fitted with zero-emission electric motors. The cars are inspired by the MGB Roadster of the 1960s and retain all their classic styling but are designed to work in a contemporary world.
These cars are the vision of RWB founder Peter Swain, who has worked with Continental Engineering Services (CES) and Zytek Automotive, both part of Continental AG, which provides the world championship-winning technology applied to Formula E racing cars. Together they have created a vehicle with the aesthetic appeal of a classic car but with modern electrical engineering.
Under the brand-new heritage body shell from British Motor Heritage, sits a patented power drivetrain system that has been three years in the making. RBW has fitted a Hyperdrive Innovation’s lithium-ion battery technology that delivers 94-horsepower letting the MGB hit 0-60mph (0-100kph) in nine seconds, with a top speed of 80 mph (129kph). This is quicker than the original combustion engine MGB back in the 60s.
The battery pack uses six Hyperdrive Lithium-ion battery modules but the capacity of the battery pack is not specified. RBW claim this set-up offers a range of up to 160 miles (258km). Customers can expand this to eight for an additional cost, which increases the range to 200 miles (322 km). Charging is only up to 3kW which takes around eight hours for a full charge.
RBW uses their patented system which sits the electric motor at the rear of the car with the battery technology under the bonnet. This is to perfectly balance the weight distribution. Not only does this give the driver better handling of the vehicle, but it also retains that sports car feel and allows maximum battery volume to be housed.
Production of the new electric roadster is due to start in early 2021, with prices starting from £90,000.
