Sales figures from August show that Ireland, like so many other countries around the world, is experiencing a big increase in electric car and vehicle sales. During this month sales grew to 522 making the total for the year 5,127.
The market share jumped an impressive 11 percent during August, which brings the year-to-date figure to 6.5 percent. This has been a mixture of plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars, with the latter becoming the biggest sellers for the year so far.
Nissan’s Leaf has been a long-standing and popular all-electric car and has topped the sales so far this year in Ireland selling 551 units. Telsa’s Model S continues to be a popular choice and is currently in second with 490 cars sold, while Kia’s Niro plug-in hybrid sits in third with 445 sales.
It’s a little shocking to see the Renault ZOE down in 10th place for the year so far in Ireland. This is the biggest selling car in Europe and is cheaper than the Leaf. It offers more range too. It will be interesting to see how the list stands at the end of the year. Regardless of brand, it’s all positive news for the electric car industry and the planet.
