MG believe over 50 percent of their sales will be electric by 2021

British car producer MG has seen massive growth in the sale of its electric cars recently. MG, who are part of China’s SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, saw record growth figures during September when traditional combustion engine car sales crashed to their lowest level in the last 21 years.

MG saw figures for all their vehicles rise with a record of 3,668 new registrations during September. This is a 169 percent increase over 2019. What’s most impressive is that 1,176 of these sales were for the MG ZS EV zero-emission electric sports utility vehicle (SUV). This accounts for over 30 percent of MG’s sales for the month.

It’s not surprising to see the MG ZS EV do so well because this family-sized electric SUV is such great value. Prices start from £25,495 and it offers up to 163-miles (262km) of range and will hit 0-62mph (0-100kph) in 8.5 seconds, with a top speed of 87mph.

This trend of rising electric car sales looks set to continue, which is good news for MG who have just launched their MG5 electric estate car. This offers a range of up to 214 miles (344km) with prices starting from £24,495. MG believes the popularity of these two plug-in models will help them achieve their goal of 50 percent of their sales being electric by 2021.

Daniel Gregorious, Head of Sales & Marketing at MG Motor UK said:

“September was a staggeringly good month for MG in the UK. Firstly, we achieved our biggest ever sales month. Secondly, within that record total, we sold 1,176 MG ZS EVs, meaning that almost one in three of the cars we sold were zero-emissions electric cars. No other mainstream manufacturer has performed so well.

Our dealers have embraced the MG electric revolution and they’re now brilliantly placed to lead the industry’s shift to plug-in cars. They’ve invested, they’ve worked hard and they’ve bought-in to our vision, and they deserve this success”.
