Best electric convertible cars in 2023

Up until recently, electric vehicles with a convertible roof were an uncommon sight. But as manufacturers continue to electrify their full lineups before the 2030 internal combustion engine ban (ICE) ban, there are an increasing number of options available for a roof-down, electric experience. Here are our picks of the best electric convertible cars you’re able to buy right now, and some options that are just on the horizon.

Fiat/Abarth 500e Convertible

Fiat’s latest all-electric 500 is also available with the roof off, starting at around £34k. With its retro styling and small carbon footprint, it’s the perfect summertime city car. But, with a quoted range of 199 miles, cruise control, and a top speed of 93mph, it’s equally as capable on longer journeys.

The rapid charge facility can add up to 30 miles of range in 5 minutes, or 80% in around 35 minutes. As standard, it also comes with a 10-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

If you’re looking for something a little sportier, Fiat’s in-house performance brand Abarth offers a hotted-up 500e convertible. This comes with sports seats, tweaked exterior styling, and an improved 0-60mph time of 6.8 seconds. This model also comes with an engine sound generator, emulating the sound of previous petrol-powered Abarth models.

Mini Electric Convertible

Mini has finally taken the top off its popular Mini Electric. You’ll have to move quickly if you want one, as the company is only doing a limited run of convertible EVs so far – just 150 are available in the UK out of 999 worldwide, with a starting price of £52,500. With 181bhp from its electric motor, it’s quick off the line, too. A Harmon Kardon sound system also comes as standard.

Once the all-new Electric Mini arrives next year, we can also expect a new convertible version in 2025. This could be worth waiting for, as range is expected to reach up to 250 miles, making it much more capable for longer journeys.

Smart EQ Fortwo Cabrio

Smart’s two-seat convertible is one of the best electric convertible cars for the city, with a length of just under 2.7 metres. It’s also the cheapest you can buy on our list – that is, until the Fiat Topolino arrives next year. With a starting price of £24,645, it comes with heated seats and a heated steering wheel, along with Apple Carplay/Android Auto integration.

In the future…

Fiat Topolino

Fiat plans to launch its ultra-compact Topolino EV next year in the UK – a mechanically-identical version of the Citroen Ami, with more retro styling and a removable fabric roof. This means a top speed of 28mph, and a range of 47 miles. As we can expect the Fiat to have a similar price tag to the Ami’s £8,095, this could make the Topolino the cheapest electric convertible you can buy in the near future.

MG Cyberster

MG are back in the sports car game, with the recently unveiled electric Cyberster convertible. There’s no word on performance just yet, but the recently unveiled 435bhp MG4 EV XPOWER gives us an idea of the sort of power we can expect from the Cyberster. MG says this car will be ready for sale in Summer 2024, which would beat the likes of Porsche and BMW to offering electric convertible cars.

Tesla Roadster

Tesla is also claiming a 2024 launch for its long-awaited Roadster, with a removable glass roof. Claims of a 1.9 second 0-60 time, a 250mph top speed, and 620 miles of range would also make it one of the fastest and longest range electric cars. It won’t come cheap though, with an estimated price of around $200k once it goes on sale.
