The crossover electric vehicle (EV) blurs the line between larger sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and smaller hatchback style cars. They also get called crossover utility vehicles and crossover SUVs by some carmakers. The advantage of the crossover is that offers more space than a hatchback without being overly large like some SUVs. Similarly, they provide an increased ride height, greater visibility and easy access. Plus, they often use smaller and lighter-weight engines which helps with range efficiency. Citroën ë-C4 from £30,895.00
The stylish looking ë-C4 is Citroën’s first fully electric car and uses the same design as the C4 petrol and diesel versions. While the French carmaker calls it a hatchback we think it’s more of a crossover in terms of size.
The ë-C4 has a 50kWh battery powering its electric motor that has a top speed of 93mph (150mph). The ë-C4 offers up to 217 miles (349km) of motoring from a full charge and can be charged up to 80 percent in 30 minutes with a 100kWh fast charger.
It has plenty of space for a family of five to spread out and there’s 198mm of knee room in the back, with ample stash space in the 380-litre boot area. It’s a comfortable car you’d happily drive to the south of France without a second thought.
Ford Mustang Mach-E from £42,530
Ford’s first electric car, the Mustang Mach-E, blurs the lines between an SUV and a crossover but with its coupé styling fits more into the latter category. It’s a luxury vehicle, hence the price, and the interior reflects this.
It’s available as a rear-wheel-drive model with a 70kWh battery that provides up 273 miles (439km) of range or a 98kWh battery offering up to 379 miles (610km). There’s also an all-wheel-drive model in both battery sizes offering 248 miles (399km) and 335 miles (539km) of range respectively.
For those who like speed, Ford also offers a 98kWh GT version with a 310 mile (499km) range and this model can hit 0-62mph (0-100kph) in just 3.7 seconds. All models offer a good balance of style, practicality and a refined drive on the road.
Hyundai IONIQ 5 from £36,995
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 offers a balance of unique good looks with some impressive stats when it comes to range, charge times and performance. The combination of smoothed angles, beautiful lines and buzzsaw wheel make this car look fast and fun without going boy racer.
The twin-motor all-wheel-drive set-up is powered by a 73kWh battery pack. This delivers 301 brake-horsepower and allows the IONIQ 5 to hit 0-62mph (0-100kph) in just 5.2 seconds. It can charge up to 80 percent in just 18 minutes with a 350-kW charger.
Inside, the light grey and white colour palette offer an instant feeling of relaxation. Strangely, it feels much bigger inside thanks to a cleverly thought out layout that was designed by a top Korean architect. It’s driver-friendly from the off which transfers to a truly relaxing drive.
Kia EV6 from £40,895
The EV6 is a sleek looking crossover that was launched earlier this year. It’s Kia’s first car based on the company’s dedicated new E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) electric car technology which it shares with the Hyundai IONIQ 5.
Every UK model of this electric crossover features a long-range 77.4kWh battery pack. Ultra-fast 800V charging capabilities, which is standard on all models, allow the EV6 to recharge up to 80 percent battery charge in as little as 18 minutes with a fast charger.
For those that like speed, the range-topping GT model, which is due in the second half of 2022, features a powerful all-wheel-drive system. Its 430kWh dual-motor delivers a combined total power output of 577 horsepower. Kia engineers are targeting an incredible 0-62mph (0-100kph) acceleration of just 3.5-seconds.
Lexus UX300e from £41,745.00
As Lexus’ first all-electric model, the UX300e remains in keeping with the brand aiming at high-end luxury. Inside, Lexus have fitted additional sound dampening to help reduce external noise and road vibrations for a smooth and quiet ride.
A 54.3kWh battery pack powers the front-wheel-drive Lexus which delivers 201 brake horsepower and 300Nm of torque. It can hit 0-62mph (0-100kph) in 7.5 seconds and delivers up to 190 miles (306km) of range.
When it comes to charging, this electric crossover supports 50kW DC fast-charging allowing an up to 80 percent charge in just 52 minutes. With a domestic home wallbox charger a full charge takes about eight hours
Nissan Ariya £TBA
The Ariya is Nissan’s latest electric vehicle and follows in the footsteps of the extremely popular LEAF, which has sold over half million units worldwide. The aerodynamically shaped Ariya has modern good looks offered in a timeless package.
The Ariya will be offered in two or all-wheel-drive versions. Both will also be offered with either a 63kWh or 87kWh battery. These models offer up to 233 miles (375km) and 310 miles (500km) of range respectively. There’s also a performance model that uses a 87kWh battery that can hit 0-62mph (0-100kph) in just 5.1 seconds and offers up to 201 miles (338km) of range.
Inside, Nissan wanted to create an electric vehicle with spacial architecture which we think they have achieved. The flat floor and all the open space combined with the slim body-hugging seats make it feel lounge-like. The Ariya will be available to order soon.
Polestar 2 from £39,900
Polestar will be offering three versions of their luxury crossover sports utility vehicle (SUV) with prices starting from below £40,000. This electric car has a sleek exterior with a modern interior that will please any car enthusiast.
The base model features a 64kWh battery with a 165kW (224-horsepower) motor that offers up to 273 miles (439km) of range. The brand’s most powerful Polestar 2 comes with 78kWh battery with a long-range dual 300kW (408-horsepower) motor. This offers up to 298 miles (480km) of range and costs £45,900.
All versions feature 19-inch wheels, signature front and rear LED light designs and frameless mirrors. The upholstery is a vegan material and comes with a high-performance audio system with eight speakers, parking sensors and a rear-view camera.
Tesla Model X from £102,000
While Tesla describe the Tesla’s Model X as an SUV it fits more into the crossover category in terms of size and shape. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive car is available as a five or seven-seater. The latter offers three rows of seats and thanks to the upward hinged rear doors this makes it easy to get in and out of and practical in daily use.
On the flip side, the Model X remains a performer hitting 0-60mph (0-97kph) in just 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 155mph (249kph). It also offers an impressive 360 mile (579km) range.
Telsa also offers their Plaid version that will hit the same speed in just 2.5 seconds and tops out at 163mph (262kph). The range remains impressive at 340 miles (347km) and the battery can be charged up to 80 percent in around 40 minutes.
Vauxhall Mokka-e from £30,540
The Mokka-e was released earlier this year and is built on Vauxhall’s multi-energy Common Modular Platform (CMP). This sporty-looking crossover measures 4,151mm long, 1,791mm wide (excluding the mirrors) and is 1,531mm tall. The Mokka-e features three driving modes to suit driving requirements and energy consumption.
The zero-emissions Mokka-e features 100kw (136PS) electric motor that produces 260Nm of torque. This is driven by a 50kWh battery that delivers up to 201 miles (324km) of range from a full charge.
It comes with a standard 11kW on-board charger but supports up to 100kW rapid charging, with an 80 percent charge taking just 30 minutes. It’s a neat looking family car that offers practicality at an affordable price.
Volkswagen ID.5 £TBA
The ID.5 will launch in 2022 and is Volkswagen’s dedicated crossover electric vehicle following in the footsteps of the smaller ID.3 family car and the larger ID.4 electric sports utility (SUV).
This new electric cross will be powered by a 77kWh lithium-ion battery that’s located battery between the axles to improve handling. This will deliver a projected range of up to 309 miles (497km). It also features fast-charging up to 135kW (DC) and can add up to 62 miles (100km) in just seven minutes.
The sleek-looking coupé is equipped with a panoramic roof to let light in and uses the new ID. software version 3.0. This includes improved charging performance and voice control among other features.
